Mike Rehling lives quietly in the north woods of Michigan with his cat and his memories . . .
basho paid no taxes
in the wanderings that took him to the north country basho held no real job. he stayed in barns. sometimes sleeping alongside the road. but most often he stayed in taoist or zen monasteries which were also located in the north. the rural setting and the definitive seasons must have held much inspiration for him. there were no salaries paid to monks so the price of staying with them was simply being blended into their daily work routine. sometimes his haiku were of interest to them but a good deal of the time he was just a guy with a bamboo mat and his rice bowl who worked in the fields for his portion of the simple meals they served . . .
