What incredible depth to these haikai poems!

    e.g.

    bedside vigil
    a child folds
    a paper caladrius

The caladrius, according to Roman mythology, is a snow-white bird that lives in the king’s house. It is said to be able to take the sickness into itself and then fly away, dispersing the sickness and healing both itself and the sick person.

It has been theorized that the caladrius is based on a real bird. Due to descriptions of it being completely white with no black on it, it is possible that it was based on the dove, or even the heron. SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA

It’s one of those haikai poems that opens up like a lotus in the morning, and could start either a short story or a full novel.

A brilliant poem and I’m glad I looked up “caladrius” as I feel like I’ve grown knowing the history of the word, and how vast and yet intimate the poem by Wilbert Salgado is, as it grows and blossoms with each re-reading.

Thank you, Wilbert, for your beatiful haiku.

Thank you so much, Alan, for your comment and the explanation of the ‘caladrius’. It’s opened up the haiku for me.

And what a lovely thought that there could be a bird out there that might take away your illness!
