Haiku Poet Word Search

Curated by Kelly Sauvage Moyer

Suzanne Leaf-Brock

“I spend my days playing with words. It never gets old. Even when I am out decorating the woods with knick knacks, I am composing in my head. To live deep and full, I need to spend as much time outdoors as possible; and, when I’m inside, I need a lot of windows to gaze out of so I can think and ponder life.”

Enjoyed your Word Search, Debbie, and loved all three of your poems, thoigh the tomato one resonated with me most, as we do that (with less snow!).

Not a problem on the wrong name. One of my good friends is Debbie so it’s a compliment! The tomato one was so fun, came up with it while looking at my last of the season greenish tomatoes in the kitchen I had picked before our hard freeze.

I love how I can read both the fragment phrase approach to this haiku:

    swallowtail puddling

    mom’s fingertips
    skim my cheek

But also, that I can be allowed to read ‘puddling’ not as a gerund, but as an ongoing verb as ‘puddling mom’s fingertips’ and where the syntax turns on its head if I read each line as part of one phrase! It has the touch of Japanese haiku (post-hokku). Is your mom’s fingertips like a swallowtail that is joyfully puddling.

Wonderful extra choice and option of reading in at least two different ways, which I love in haiku!
